If you were to list the most relaxing things you did this week, going to the dentist would probably not be one of them. But it could be. Your next visit to the dentist can be relaxing and restorative, and possibly even inspirational and rejuvenating. And there’s no drugs involved. NuCalm can help people with dental anxiety, but it’s beneficial for everyone who is not completely comfortable at the dentist–and who is?–to have a more enjoyable, relaxing visit.
About 95% of people benefit from NuCalm. If you would like to learn whether you’re one of them, please call (817) 481-6888 for an appointment with Dallas relaxation dentist Dr. Becky Coats at Grapevine Dental Care.
Benefits of NuCalm
NuCalm is an exciting new approach to being relaxed at the dentist. Without the use of drugs, we are able to help you achieve a relaxed mental state. NuCalm offers many great benefits for dental patients, including:
- Takes effect in five minutes
- Reduction or elimination of dental anxiety
- Relaxed feeling at the dentist
- Less need for local anesthesia
- Calming of strong gag reflex
- Can be extended for an entire dental procedure
- Less painful muscle tension during and after visit
NuCalm is a great approach to help you get the dental treatment you need or desire without anxiety or its unpleasant effects. Instead, you’ll experience a profoundly relaxed sensation. Even if you don’t think you have dental anxiety, your difficulty getting numb, strong gag reflex, and tense, sore muscles before, during, or after the procedure can tell the truth that you are fearful and stressed. NuCalm can usually help you overcome that, although some people may benefit more from sedation dentistry.
But dental anxiety isn’t the only reason why people seek out NuCalm. For many people, like motivational speaker Tony Robbins, NuCalm’s primary benefits have nothing to do with anxiety. Instead, it’s about:
- Achieving a deeply meditative state
- Increasing energy, inspiration, and creativity
- Gaining focus and perspective
- Reducing sleep problems
Many of our patients have described these secondary benefits of NuCalm, and you may experience them, too. However, these benefits are more variable, so we’re reluctant to promise them along with the more consistent, reliable outcomes of NuCalm.
How Does NuCalm Work
Your body’s fight-or-flight response is controlled by your sympathetic nervous system. That’s the involuntary nervous system that causes you to break out into cold sweats, experience an elevated heart rate, develop tense fidgety muscles, get dilated pupils, and other stress responses. The sympathetic nervous system is one part of the autonomic nervous system, and NuCalm is the only technology patented as, “Systems and Methods for Balancing and Maintaining the Health of the Human Autonomic Nervous System.” In other words, NuCalm allows us to control parts of your involuntary nervous system so you can avoid stress responses.
NuCalm achieves this control with four simple steps. The first step is the use of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural hormone that your brain uses to regulate sleep. This can be delivered by a chewable tablet, but we prefer to use the skin cream formula because it means you won’t have anything in your mouth.
Next, we use cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), a gentle electric current that has been used for more than 60 years to treat anxiety and insomnia. On its own, it’s about 58% effective in the treatment of anxiety, calming parts of the brain that trigger anxiety responses. As part of NuCalm, it not only disrupts anxiety responses, but makes the brain more receptive to GABA, which it would normally ignore during stressful times.
Having disrupted some of the anxious brain wave patterns, it’s time to establish new, relaxed ones. We do that with neuroacoustic software. Consciously, you’re just listening to music in headphones, but unconsciously, your brain is hearing two different beats--one in each ear. These beats are set up so that as your brain tries to reconcile them, it gets entrained to put its own brain wave activity in a relaxed range similar to the brain waves seen at the edge of sleep or during deep meditation.
Finally, we put a light-blocking mask on you. This helps keep out the bright lights used to help out with examination and treatment. These bright lights can disrupt the relaxation process and make you stressed.
It takes just a couple minutes to get you set up, and within five minutes you’ll be enjoying a relaxed state.
Is NuCalm Safe?
NuCalm is a great innovation partly because of its extraordinary safety record. With over half a million NuCalm treatments, there has been not a single adverse event.
Not all components of NuCalm are recommended for all people, though we avoid them more out of an abundance of caution rather than with any sense that they’re likely to cause you any harm.
